As schools are winding up for the end of term, and millions of Brits are packing their suitcases, homes across the country will be left empty for days or weeks at a time this summer.
Unfortunately, many criminals see this as an opportunity.
However, there are steps you can take to make sure your home is protected while you’re away. Simply following our summer holiday security tips can help keep your property safe, leaving you to enjoy your holiday with total peace of mind.
- Make sure all doors, windows and gates are locked. These will be the main entry points for anyone looking to gain access to your property.
- Ensure your alarm system is activated before you set off. And, if you have a monitored alarm system, make sure your monitoring company has an up-to-date list of your keyholders.
- Let your neighbours know you are going away, and how long for. They can then be on the lookout for any suspicious activity while you’re away.
- It may be tempting to leave a spare key hidden outside your property or in your garden somewhere. Don’t! Always leave them with a trusted neighbour or nearby friend instead.
- Utilise timers to turn lights on at night, giving the impression that someone is home.
- Mow your lawn before you leave. Long, uncut grass can be a clue that a property is vacant.
- Check all garages, outbuildings and sheds are secured, and nothing of value is left out in your garden.
- Avoid announcing your holiday plans on social media, and don’t post holiday pictures while you’re there. You never really know who will see it and then know that your house is unoccupied.
